The Different Care Services For The Elderly
The condition of the person seeking nursing care is the key factor in your choice of a long-term care facility. A nursing home should be properly equipped with facilities and personnel for the proper housing and feeding needs, as well as health care of the aged ¾¢ adequate quarters, proper food and care giving. The levels of nursing and therapy services offered vary quite widely, and these should be carefully matched to the individual’s needs. The resident’s physician is involved regularly in the direction of a resident’s care. The physician should be constantly updated of the condition of the residents especially if any change occurs.
Sheltered Care Community
People who are functionally independent but need some assistance in daily living, require the care of a sheltered care facility (SC).
The focus of attention in sheltered care facilities is on the daily activities of the resident rather than on the medical aspect. The areas where the resident is being cared for are his dietary needs, his tidiness, medication maintenance and his recreational activities.
Assisted Living
This is the place most appropriate for individuals who are able to take care of themselves except for a few things where they will need assistance.
An assisted living facility is a congregate residential setting that provides or coordinates personal services, 24-hour supervision and (scheduled and unscheduled) assistance, activities, and health-related services; is designed to minimize the need to move; is designed to accommodate individual residents’ changing needs and preferences; is designed to maximize residents’ dignity, autonomy, privacy, independence, choice, and safety; and is designed to encourage family and community involvement.
Intermediate Care
Those who, on the recommendation of a physician, must be cared for by a licensed nurse, should be housed on an intermediate care facility (ICF).
These health care facilities are for persons who are not able to fully function without assistance because of advance age or due to less serious but persistent illnesses and need to undergo health recovery programs. Work related and physical recovery programs are also available in these places. Preferably, this facility type should be a participant in the Medicare and/or Medicaid program. Check with each facility.
Skilled Nursing Care Community
A skilled nursing facility (SNF) is a place that provides guardianship care to the very old and the infirm.
There are licensed and certified nurses and nursing assistants present who are able to administer the care and services required for the residents as prescribed by physicians. Other services that are usually provided are physical and occupational rehabilitation and social care. This facility should also be qualified for Medicare and/or Medicaid benefits. Check with each facility.
