Not sure what to buy someone as a retirement gift? Don’t worry, many people find themselves in your situation. Chocolates or a CD won’t suffice for such a special occasion, but the gift ideas set out below will do.

A quality branded watch is a perfect retirement gift to give. Most men wear a watch every day, but despite the fact that it is an item that they use daily, they tend to make do with a sub-standard one that has to be replaced every few years. If you buy them a good watch, it will last them years and years – probably even until they pass away. As well as being something that they will actually use, its also a daily reminder to them of those that gave it to him. Every time he checks the time, he will see the watch that you bought him and will think of you.

If he isn’t a watch wearer, or he already has an expensive watch, then getting a portrait painted for him is also a nice idea. You could get a professional artist to either paint a picture of him, his children and grandchildren, or all together. Such a gift would certainly get a central location in his home. To find an artist for the job, search on the internet for portrait artists based in your area. A photo portrait would be an alternative, and would probably be cheaper too. Either way, be sure to get a nice frame to accompany the picture.

For someone who already, seemingly, has everything, then rather than buying him an item, opt for buying him some kind of experience instead. A helicopter ride or a trip in a hot air balloon are experiences that he won’t ever forget. Or, how about a family trip away? People of retirement age will often have young grandchildren and they would love the opportunity to spend some quality time with them.

Any of the above would be welcomed by someone retiring. If price is an issue for you, then remember that pooling funds with other people is quite acceptable. Others will be happy to do so as they would surely also prefer to buy someone one big, special gift rather than odds and ends that would soon get forgotten about. So, don’t hold back on the financial front, phone people, email people or send them a message on Facebook.
