Protecting Your Kids’ Eyes
These days children spend a huge amount of time in front of a computer screen or reading books, particularly when they’re studying for exams such as GCSE’s, SAT’s, etc.
Unfortunately, whilst they may be most worried about doing well in their exam, as a parent you should be equally concerned with eye strain. Eye strain is becoming a much more apparant problem for people in normal life, especially for children who spend a phenomenal amount of their time looking at computer screens or televisions. Eye strain is most commonly caused through focusing on a single distance to a long period, which is why computer screens are the main offender. You can also find yourself suffering from eye strain if you’re working in a room with unsufficient lighting, your screen is at the wrong height or, quite simply, from stress.
As a parent, you’ll need to ensure your child is regularly taking breaks away from their computer. This should be happening irrespective of whether or not they wear prescription glasses. A break away from the screen for even just a couple of minutes can make a huge difference and drastically reduce the risk of eye strain.
You should also try and ensure your child is working with a screen at the correct height; ie. it’s not too high or low for them. You should also make sure that the room your child is working in is sufficiently lit, so they’re not straining their eyes in low light levels.
You can also reduce the likelihood of your child straining their eyes by putting an anti-reflective coating on all computer screens. This coating will remove all reflections from a computer screen, considerably reducing the chances of eye strain.
Always try and keep your children’s eye health in mind, regardless of whether or not you’re inside or outside. When your kids go out during the summer, always make sure they have sunglasses with 100% UV protection (or prescription sunglasses if they’re glasses wearers), in order to effectively protect their eyes from the harmful elements of the sun.
