Making Your Home Safe For The Elderly
As you get old and you change your house has to change too, this means if you’re about to have an elderly relative come live with you there are a lot of changes you’re going to have to make. There are the larger things the a stair lift then there are smaller things like making sure the light switches are right inside the door. You can make sure the bedroom is down stairs but the one room you’re going to have to adjust is the bathroom as this can be extremely dangerous and it is an essential room.
It doesn’t take too much effort or money to turn this room into a wet room and this is often the safest option. The main difference is making sure the whole room can get wet so if you have carpet or even wooden flooring it needs to be replaced with tiles. Toilets have to be thought about as well. Try and get one that’s slightly higher up and don’t forget the grab rails too. A soft close toilet seat would also be more suitable for an elderly bathroom. If you are going for a wet room you’re not necessarily going to need a shower curtain. Curtains can sometimes get caught and cause people to trip and it’s not like you’ve got to worry about getting water everywhere. Try and opt for a shower screen if you want to ensure some privacy.
If you really want to ensure your bathroom is fully fitted for an elderly person a sit in bath is much safer than standing on the slippery bath or shower floor. Any steps are going to need grab rails in the bathroom and the whole house. Any steps should ideally be slopes to minimise the risk of tripping. It’s not just door steps that can be tripped on, any rugs need to be secure or ideally put away completely.
