Finding Non-Medical Home Care
There are many ways of getting non-medical home care. A big concern is whether to get an independent contractor or someone from an agency. Let’s discuss both options.
Independent Contractors
Non-agency workers, or independent contractors, are hired by either a family member or the person needing help. This will seem more affordable, but keep in mind that there might be some hidden costs and risks involved.
Whoever hires an independent contractor must pay all appropriate payroll taxes because, technically, that person is the employer.
If the non-agency worker gets injured while on the job, the employer will be the one who’ll pay for the medical bills.
The independent contractor is also not obligated to find a replacement if he gets sick or goes on a vacation.
There are many cases of independent contractors who thieved and abused the people under their care, so be sure to do a background check before hiring anyone.
Agency Services
Companies employ individuals to provide specific services that help with activities of daily living such as preparing meals, light housework, bathing and companionship. People who hire from agencies also won’t have to worry about taxes, insurance, bonding, and workers’ compensation. The agency will also provide a replacement in case the current employee can’t work.
The home care agency provides training for its employees and ongoing supervision as well. This enables the company to know what consumers need. The agency also conducts background checks according to state law.
You’ll get better quality services from agencies since most are licensed. That means that as a person’s needs change, he does not need to work with more than one company. Working with one company can make it easier to access formal payer sources such as Medicare.
