Keeping Your Farm Safe
If you’ve got young children, the first thing you need to do is make them aware of all the farm’s dangerous areas of the farm. Make sure that you put strict ground rules down so that children know exactly where they can and can’t go. By having a secure area for children to play in, away from the animals and farm machinery, you can be confident that they’ll remain safe.
The near constant presence of farm machinery probably presents the biggest danger to children. The key to keeping your children safe is to educate them to the dangers. Ensure they know how to behave around things like tractors and other machinery. Obviously, children should never be around farm machinery unsupervised.
Potentially the most dangerous items are ATV’s and motorcycles which are also potentially the most dangerous. On most farms these are the most popular forms of transport. Make sure you train any children who are going to be using these. Of course, safety gear is a must.
Most farms also contain livestock which themselves present another set of dangers. Make sure children know how they should act around animals and ensure they’re never alone with them. It’s also very important that any enclosures, pens and fences are in tip top condition. You also need to make sure all gates remain closed. Lastly, make sure any slurry pits or vats are kept covered.
