Family Games to Play in the Car
Regardless if you are driving to some distant vacation destination or simply taking a quick drive down to your neighborhood store, car games are often a good way to pass time. A ride in a vehicle is often rather boring for kids, which can lead to restlessness or misbehaving. Playing games while driving is usually a good way to entertain children and keep them occupied. Here are a few games you can try playing the next time you take an automobile trip.
Automobile Bingo
This classic game is always a great one for kids to try out. A good way to play is to use purchased bingo cards, that you can keep handy within your car for impromptu games. If you do not wish to purchase bingo cards, you can create your very own. Simply draw a bingo grid onto some paper. A “free” square is used in the middle. Then draw small pictures of objects which are commonly seen while driving in a vehicle, such as a railroad crossing sign, traffic light, stop sign, cow or possibly a certain color car. If you don’t possess a great deal of creative talent, you could find small pictures of these objects inside a magazine, cut them out, and glue them within the squares. A different way to design your bingo cards is to use a word processing or graphics program on your computer, using clip art rather than the drawings. Make a few different versions of the card, adding different pictures and placing them in various positions on the cards. Then, work with a photocopy machine to produce numerous copies of the cards. Give each child a card and also a sheet of small stickers. When they’re able to find an item, then they cover the picture with one of the stickers. If the trip is going to be short, tell the kids that the first one to complete a vertical, diagonal, or horizontal row will be declared the winner. However, on longer car trips you can extend the length of the game by requiring the complete card to be filled. It can be fun to show off the winner’s bingo card inside a 5×7 picture frame at your house. After that, every time you take a car trip and play the game, the winner can show their card in the “frame of honor”.
Alphabet Photograph Tag
If your child is old enough to use a digital camera, then playing alphabet photo tag is lots of fun. Give each child an economical digital camera to make use of. While you travel, they can take pictures of people, animals, or any other objects that they see, one picture for each one of the letters of the alphabet. Decide beforehand if your game rules state that the photos need to be taken in the very same order as the alphabet, or if they can be taken in random order. The first person to photograph an image for each letter of the alphabet is the winner. One added benefit of the game will be the amount of interesting vacation photos you will have, some of which will be nice enough to display in ornate picture frames or collage picture frames when you go back home.
So, next time you go on a road trip, be sure you try out some fun games in order to make the time go faster. Everyone will enjoy themselves, and you also won’t be hearing “are we there yet”!
