One of the many challenges of parenting is convincing a sickly youngster to take their medicine. Younger kids are unable to effectively swallow pills, and many over the counter syrups produce arms-crossed protests combined with the dreaded “ick” face. One possible solution to this problem would be to ask your doctor about writing your prescription so it may be taken to a compounding pharmacy. These pharmacies are sprouting up all over the country, and are really a step back in time to when almost all medications were made one at a time for each patient determined by his or her individual needs.

Nowadays, these niche pharmacies are known for mixing prescription and over the counter drugs that meet the unique needs and physiology of each patient. This can come in the form of changing pills into liquid or dissolving form, re-forming prescription drugs to exclude possible allergens, or adjusting the dosage of ingredients as needed, or simply to produce formulas that taste better for young children.

The most common alternative treatments that pharmacies specializing in pediatric medicine can help with are:

* Transdermal gels for treating nausea and vomiting. Particularly effective when the little one struggles to keep anything down, these are typically rubbed into the wrist or some other area where the skin is thin.

* Medicated lollipops for sore throats. It may be formulated in any dosage strength, and what child doesn’t want a lollipop?

* Medicines created in the flavor of the child’s choice. Some pharmacies may also have a menu that your child can browse and choose from.

* Specialized ointments for skin issues such a diaper rash.

* Quick-dissolving tablets for easy administration. These can be produced in many flavors as well, and can be an ideal way to administer combinations of drugs.

* Topical anesthetics for numbing the epidermis. Especially effective for use right before an injection or taking blood.

Compounding pharmacies can also formulate medicines that can be put inside a baby’s bottle (thus sneaking past the infant’s taste buds), pacifiers with special chambers that contain the medicine, and finally, suppositories.

There has been much in the media lately about immunizations, the artificial additives and preservatives they contain, and their relative safety. One long standing controversy is the addition of Thimerosal to all types of vaccines. This is an ingredient used to prevent bacteria growth in the vials, and is a kind of mercury that has been linked with mercury poisoning. Compounding pharmacies can prepare vaccines in the more pure form without most of the dangerous additives that are used for various reasons.

Next time you need a prescription filled for your child, ask your personal doctor or naturopath whether getting the prescription filled by a compounding pharmacy might potentially make more sense for your child as well as your peace of mind.
