Calgary Gardens – Develop a rain garden for a healthy landscape

Across the US, a new type of garden that uses rainwater in a different way, known as rain gardens, are becoming increasingly popular. Rain gardens lets water run off from rainstorms to soak the plants and soil, instead of letting them be wasted in the sewers. Rain gardens lets the water settle in briefly until the garden is soaked, saving water from directly going into water drains. More than letting the water pollute the natural resources, these garden types, just like the ones in Calgary gardens can give an efficient way to maintain your lawn.

Rain garden works in a way where it run off from the top of your house and then letting the water settle down at the ground surface to water the garden soil.   Absorption basically lasts in a couple of hours, without worries of disrupting the insects ecosystem. The main benefit of having this type of garden is to utilize water more efficiently and to keep city pollution out of rivers and creeks. Rain gardens potentially cut down the amount of pollution that reaches rivers and streams by 30% as well. Ideally, these types of gardens are small ones, situated in the city. The purpose for it is for the garden to become excessively wet and dry based on the rain that falls, big gardens can’t manage that.

This gardens does not require to be fertilized, plus the runoff water from the rain has phosphorus and nitrogen which are helpful nourishment for plants. The best type of plants to exist in a rain garden are shrubs, grasses, and perennials. Native plants are recommended because they have the greatest tolerance for climate, soil, and weather conditions in that given area. These gardens boost wildlife and natural habitat in urban cities even more for it resembles a mini rainforest. While rain gardens can attract humming birds, bumble bees and butterflies, noxious mosquitoes finds here no place to breed. The reason for it is that the water does not retain long enough in rain gardens where mosquito larvae hatch.

You can have a garden pond which has an inmost basin if you want to see more water, but include an aeration, filter and pump. Calgary ponds are popular these days with popular water features like waterfalls, fountains and man-made lagoon.   Remember to have koi pond filtration in the pond too, like a basket filter or a UV filter to maintain its efficiency and health. Garden ponds share similar purpose with rain garden for the most part.

Rain gardens are typically located ten feet away from the roof of a building but they can also be placed further away. The garden functions as a natural irrigation which means there is no actual need for it to be watered. Rain gardens can either be self-contained or under-drained. Under-drained gardens usually drains quicker than because of the porous soil. After a rain storm, the lower elevation plant of under-drained gardens receives more water since it stays the ground for a while.

Rain gardens would primarily beautify your property, promote a natural habitat and lets you add more green in urban areas at little water cost… though still depend on the seasonal rainfall.
