Baby walkers – the pros and cons

Whether to use a baby push walker or not is one of the many parenting concerns. With many studies listing the disadvantages of this device as well as reported accidents incurred from using it, some parents still find the walker useful for both babies and them. Before you make a rush decision about a baby walker, lets study its pros and cons.

A baby walker is a tool that provides the opportunity for young children who cant walk to go to one place from another. It offers babies the chance of moving without the help from their parents. It provides babies a kind of freedom and pleasure in getting what they want. With many features included in the baby walker, they can enjoy different kinds of entertainment while parents have a little time off carrying and constant tending. Caution must observed, though, on the excessive time the baby use his walker because of the study by Crouchman that it affects the normal locomotors development of the baby.

A research from Siegel and Burton revealed that babies who used a walker sat, crawled and walked later than non-users. Comparable to this study is the one conducted by Garrett, et al., which revealed that babies who used a walker had 3.3 days of delayed walking and 3.7 days delayed standing unassisted. Different agencies like the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics warned the parents against the use of a baby walker because of the many dangers it poses.
The normal developmental way of walking first before running might be gone when babies are put in a walker because of the fast movement it offers. However, a baby push walker provides parents a break, even for a short time while the infant is given a few minutes by himself.

The decision still lies in parents whether to provide their babies with a walker or not and the information given serve only as guide. Somehow; dangers are always around where babies are concerned. The key factor here is still parents supervision.
