Baby Food Allergies Tips On Identifying And Avoiding Them

One of the most worrying aspects of introducing new foods to their baby is the risk of baby food allergies. To minimize potential problems and make your child’s introduction to solid food safe and happy, there are simple steps you can take.

In allergic reactions, the immune system of your baby treats a harmless substance as a harmful one. Diarrhea, nausea, constipation, watery or red eyes, and eczema are included as baby food allergy symptoms. A reaction called allergic shock can also occur but this is very rare. This could lead to choking because the throat and tongue can dangerously swell. Professional medical help must be sought immediately during this situation.

Don’t confuse baby food allergies with food intolerance. Food intolerance in a baby can be caused by other things besides allergen and he will have difficulty in digesting that type of food. A medical professional should make the diagnosis.

In order to prevent baby food allergies such as these, or to identify foods to which your baby reacts, it is important to follow these simple guidelines.

Don’t feed your baby solid food until he’s at least 6 months old. That’s because his immune system is better developed during this stage.

Only introduce one new food at a time and wait for a few days to see if a reaction occurs. It’s easier to spot the problem this way and it’s also easier to eliminate that food from your baby’s diet.

Stay away from foods which are more prone to cause allergic reactions. Included are gluten and citrus fruits, shellfish, and eggs (particularly the whites).

Perhaps you suffer from an allergy yourself and you need to decide if your baby is at a particularly high risk of developing allergies. Often, this could result to the increased risk of allergies for your baby even though it’s not to the same allergen such as the substance being responsible for the reaction.

You need to discuss your concerns with a medical professional.

Besides being cautious, keep in mind that only 8% of children are affected by baby food allergies. Measures that will give you confidence to safely introduce solid food to your baby include keeping things in perspective, introducing new foods individually, and staying alert for reactions.
